• Path lights work well in the walkways leading up to the porch, providing light for people entering and exiting the area or home. You can also choose from solar-powered path lights that receive energy throughout the day from solar radiation, which is stored in the light for use at night. • Ceiling lights range from pendants to overhead lights that are flush-mounted directly on the ceiling. The higher up you install the fixture, the more light it will cast over the area. • Sconces work well next to doorways, providing targeted light to one specific area so you can easily put a key in the lock or identify visitors. • Post lighting helps shed light along walkways, and you can even use it on an exposed porch (a porch without an overhang or ceiling) to light the entire space. The final factor to consider when purchase porch lighting for your home’s exterior is style, such as color and finish. Most home-improvement stores and independent dealers offer fixtures in an array of colors, and you can choose a color that complements or is the same as your home’s exterior. Finishes and materials range from brushed nickel or steel, iron or aluminum, bronze, glass, ceramic, antique. Styles include traditional, modern, contemporary, country and industrial. If you’re installing multiple lights in the porch area, it’s wise to choose a collection of lights that range in style to maintain a consistent aesthetic.

Porch Light Installation ConsiderationsHere are some of the factors to consider and styles available when upgrading the lighting on your porch. • Installation. Know what type of lighting fixture will work on your porch before you buy. If you need to hardwire a light directly into the electrical wires in the ceiling, you’ll need a light that will easily work within those requirements. If you don’t have overhead wiring, you can still install overhead lighting by choosing a hanging light with a wire-chain combination that allows you to hardwire the light on a side wall, or you can select a plug-in variety. • The elements. Installing a light that’s directly exposed to the elements? Choose a light that’s designed to withstand harsh elements like wind, rain, snow and hail. Metals that resist weather are a good choice, and it’s worthwhile to pay more for a durable light that will last longer. If the light won’t be directly exposed to the elements, choose a lower-cost  outdoor light that will resist water and moisture. • Wattage. Lastly, consider how much light you need from the fixture. As a general rule, lower-wattage bulbs will accommodate a smaller space; higher-wattage fixture will adequately light larger spaces. For instance, you can use 40-watt bulbs in lights installed beside exterior doorways. For larger spaces, as big as 100 square feet, use a higher-wattage bulb, such as a 120-watt bulb. Once you know how much wattage the location requires, you can choose a light fixture that will accommodate those needs. • Safety. If you’d like to install motion sensor lights or flood lights to secure the area around your home, your options are fairly limited. Motion sensor lights can shine a lot of light on a porch area, but the styles and wattage of these lights are fairly standard.

I bought two of these to replace outside lights on the back of our house when we had new siding installed–just couldn't put up the old, pitted, brass lights. I LOVE THEM! They are of high quality and were easy to install and work as described. I love how they come on with a dim light at dusk but go bright with any movement. Can't recommend highly enough.
